U.S. new home sales and a series of bond auctions are the highlights of Monday's economic events along with comments from European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet speaking in Madrid.

At 9:55 a.m. EDT, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet will speak at an event organized by KPMG in Madrid.

At 10 a.m. EDT, the U.S. Census Bureau will release new home sales for September. Economists expect sales to total 454k compared to August's 460k increase, a 1.3% month-over-month decline. In August, sales fell 11.5% month-over-month.

At 1:00 p.m. EDT, the U.S. Treasury will sell $25 billion in three-month bills, $25 billion in six-month bills and $6 billion in five-year TIPS.
