True story
Our receptionist was opening the mail earlier this week and in one envelope there was a payment coupon, but no check. She checked around the desk to make sure it didn't just fall out, but no check, just the payment coupon for the borrower's first payment. We are a correspondent lender so we often collect the first payment or two before a loan is sold and the servicing transferred. The receptionist looked up the borrower's phone number in the computer and gave her a call to let her know there was no payment with the coupon.
The borrower answered the phone and our receptionist explained that she received the borrower's payment coupon, but there was no check or money order inside. She went on to ask if she forget to include the payment. The borrower seemed very confused and upset and said it was our receptionist that was confused or course she didn't include a check . . . she used the coupon she got at closing to make the payment just like the loan officer and escrow officer told her. Why should she include a check if she has a coupon for a free payment!
