As if "all" builders are above the board and deal honestly. How bout more disclosure on builders; where they're getting their materials from; who are the sub-contractors and how much experience do they have; etc.etc. etc., blah blah blah! Can you tell I have pet peeve with builders, hahaha! And have they ever seen the work involved from an honest, moral, and ethical appraiser, why aren't they applauding those that do try and maintain a "trust to the people". If you want to pick on bad appraisers go right ahead, but also pick on bad builders! and Realtors, and Home Inspectors, and Closing Attorneys, and Termite Inspectors, etc etc etc..

re: NAHB Calls for Broad Reform of Appraisal System

Standardize reporting yet allow appraiser's more flexiblity in applying USPAP reporting standards?
The ignorance of the appraisal industry evident in this article is amazing. The problems with the appraisal indudstry described in this article were created by the same types of regulation the author advocates. More education and licensing expense will not make appraisers more accountable for their work. It will only increase the cost to the consumer and reduce efficiency in the delivery of reports.
Perhaps those who complain about residential appraisers should ask if they had those same complaints before HVCC or Dodd-Frank.

re: NAHB Calls for Broad Reform of Appraisal System

Standardize reports but allow greater flexibility in applying USPAP and writing reports?
All the ignorance of current appraisal regulations implicit in this artical is evidence of the self-defeating regulation of the appraisal industry. More layers of regulation will not make appraisers any more competent or accountable. It will only raise the cost to the consumer and reduce efficiency.
All that has been accomplished by separating appraisers from their clients and imposing a uniform set of reporting jargon has been to make appraiser's unaccountable for their work. More regulations of this nature won't help.

re: NAHB Calls for Broad Reform of Appraisal System

How about an system of accountability for appraisers?
I have had appraisal come in $70K apart within 30 days, and an appraisor who had made over 2 1/2 pages of errors and refuse to correct them?

A system of checks and balances needs to be put in place for some of these guy's who work markets they aren't familiar with or just flat out perform poorly.
