The Montana Department of Labor & Industry ' Business Standards Division ' Board of Realty Regulation handles the licensing of all real estate agents in Montana.

The requirements for a real estate salesperson license in Montana include being at least 18 years of age and having at least completed the 10th grade from an accredited high school or equivalent. Applicants need to successfully complete 60 hours of approved pre-licensing educational courses within the previous 24 months, and pass the Montana real estate exams with a score of 80% or better on the national portion, and 70% or better on the state portion.



 The applicant will also be required to Copy of AMP test results completed & passed within the last 12 months, and provide a 2x2 photo.  Under some circumstances the Board may approve waiver of all or part of the required pre-licensing education and/or examination. The license application fee is $122.50, and includes a one time $35.00 Recovery Account Fee.

The requirements for a real estate broker license in Montana include being 18 years of age and having a high school diploma or GED and successfully completing at least 60-hours of approved additional pre-licensing courses. The license application fee is $135, and includes a one time $35.00 Recovery Account Fee.

Applicants for the broker license need to have actively held a real estate salesperson license for two years. Within three years of applying for the broker license, the applicant needs to provide proof of a minimum 30 residential real estate transactions, or a minimum of 10 commercial, agricultural or farm/ranch real estate transactions.

 After completing the educational requirements, the applicant needs to pass the Montana real estate exams with a score of 80% or better. Under some circumstances the Board may approve waiver of all or part of either the pre-licensing education or the examination.

Both real estate brokers and salespersons are required to successfully complete 12 hours of approved continuing education courses annually.

There are three approved schools for real estate agent prelicensing. The applicant can find both classroom courses and distance education provided.

The real estate examinations in Montana are handled by the AMP Testing Center and exam fees are paid directly to AMP.

The renewal fee for a real estate salesperson is $87.50.  The annual license expires on October 31.  Renewal of real estate agent licenses can be conveniently be done online.    The fee is the same whether the  license is current or expired, active or inactive.

The renewal fee a broker licenses $100, and the annual license expires on October 31. The fee is the same whether the  license is current or expired, active or inactive.  Applicants pay a one-time Recovery Fee if not currently licensed in Montana.

Montana has a reciprocity agreement with Alberta, Canada.

Those holding a real estate license usually join organizations like the Montana Association of Realtors, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), and the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO).
