Commercial lending vs. real estate?

I know this is a real "newby" question but I was curious if anyone had a simple answer. I've been googling the definitions for some time and still can't get a sense of the industry. Are there significant differences between a commercial lender and a mortgage broker? (Mainly in licensing requirements). Someone told me they're basically the same but I've read many articles that make them sound like a completely different industries. Is one more sales and relationship based than the other?
I apologize in advance for the naivety of this question but I was mainly wondering because it would be a real benefit to have multiple career opportunities open with one license. Not because I'm lazy but because it would allow me (or anyone for that matter) to evolve and grow within an industry. Thank you!
