Can a real estate agent charge a fee for cancelling a contract?

    Hello everybody,

My friend wants to cancel his contract with his agent. My friend wants to sell the property with someone else. But the agent said there will be a fee to cancel the contract.
Is there such a fee that a real estate agent can charge to cancel a contract?

    Best Regards.

    Hi,

I would also want to know the answer to that. My sister cancelled her contract and they wanted to charge her a fee. She ended up paying nothing for the cancellation of the contract. Exactly what happened with that property transaction I can not say unfortunately

It depends on the original listing agreement.  In Florida, our listing agreements have a termination section and there is a space to enter an amount and also that the broker is entitled to recoup marketing costs.  It is optional and up to the listing agent how this section is completed.  I know that when I sign a listing agreement, I do not charge a cancellation fee, but there are some that do.  Hope this helps
