Legality of a Rental
I hope someone can give me some advice. I purchased a house with my mother as the primary mortgage holder. My name was on the deed as the secondary owner, until it was refinanced in 2006. No one informed me that my name was taken off of the deed until I tried to buy the house in 2008.
I moved out when the bank canceled my application. They did not even bother to tell me. I bought the house with the money from my grandmother's death in 1999. I lived in the house for 10 years, paid all mortgage payments and utilities, but everything was in my mother's name. Since I did not get the mortgage from the bank I had been paying for almost 10 years, I moved out. i still possess the mortgage coupon book with my name on it.
Now I find out that my mother is renting the house. She changed the locks on my house and either sold or threw out my personal belongings that were left in the house. She claimed I had 30 days to get rid of 10 years of things. She does not speak to me now, as though I intentionally "gave up" the house to her. This was never the case. I had been ill, and needed time to recuperate before emptying the house of all of my things. I had planned to put everything in storage. Now I have none of those possessions.
My questions is, do I have any recourse concerning the purchase of the house? I feel that it is totally unfair that she "took" my house and is making a profit from its rental. I need a larger living space, as I could only afford to move to a 2 bedroom apartment at the time. Who would I need to speak to?
