If there is something you would like to know about housing in America - no matter how important, inconsequential, or obscure - the American Housing Survey (AHS) probably covers it. How many total housing units exist in the U.S.? 128,203,000. How many of these consist of one room and how many of 10 or more? 689,000 and 3,024,000 respectively. And how many units have holes in the floor (612,000) or exposed wiring (344,000)? Obviously a treasure trove of information if the reader can get past asking...

In May, the New Home Sales Index fell 2.5% to its second-lowest pace in 17 years, and economists expect another decline in the June report to be released Friday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The index of sales has fallen in six of the past seven months and currently stands at an annual pace of 512k. The consensus looks for a 1.8% decline to a pace of 503k sales in June, but the range of forecasts varies from a low of 480k to a high of 530k.

The U.S. Census Bureau factory orders report surprised to the upside on Tuesday, increasing by 1.1% in April to contribute to an annual gain of 3.8%. The prior month's factory orders index was revised to show an increase of 1.5% from the previously reported 1.4% gain.

Economists were expecting a loss of 0.1% in the month.

Sales of new homes improved slightly in July with a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 870,000, up 2.8 percent above the revised June sales figures. The June number had been particularly dismal at an annualized 834,000 units, well below the 895,000 units analysts had been expecting. The final figure for June, while still well below the expected number, was 846,000, 12,000 above what had been initially reported.
