Mid-Morning Recap: Markets Pare Back Gains from Optimistic ADP Report

Major stock indexes began on a high at the open resulting from an optimistic employment index released before the bell by Automatic Data Processing. Since the open, however, all three U.S. indexes have fallen back. With little other data to chew on, markets are being driven by news that Bank of America will require $34 billion in capital to relieve balance street woes. The Day Ahead: ADP Private Employment to Signal Major Nonfarm Payrolls Losses

The main event on Tuesday will be the release of the ADP Private Employment survey at 8:15 am. The release is the most closely watched tool to predict the official government statistics to be released Friday. In March, the ADP survey showed a loss of 742,000 jobs; two days later, the BLS Nonfarm Payrolls report said the official number was -663,000. Thursday's Events: ECB & BOE Rates, ADP Employment, ISM Services, Fed-Speak

The Bank of England and European Central Bank rate decisions will kick off the day, followed by the U.S. ADP unemployment report, initial jobless claims, the ISM non-manufacturing index, Department of Energy oil inventories and some Fed-speakers in the afternoon.

The ADP employment report will be the most closely looked at economic event of the day ahead of Friday's U.S. nonfarm payrolls. In Canada, markets will receive industrial product and raw material prices for June followed by an auction of five-year government bonds. Meanwhile, energy traders will be looking at weekly U.S. crude oil inventory figures for more direction on where oil will go next.

Economist Calls U.S. ADP Employment Report "Grossly Over-Optimistic"

Following the release of the ADP private employment report on Wednesday, which posted a gain of 9k jobs in July, economists dismissed the figures as overly optimistic and predicted they won't be reflected in the BLS nonfarm payrolls survey on Friday.
