Monday should be a quiet day with no major releases out of the United States, but news from the U.S. government is expected on media reports that it plans to buy up to a 40% stake in Citigroup. In Canada, December retails sales data will be released.
At 8 a.m., the ECB's Ewald Nowotny and Ivan Sramko will speak at a panel discussion in Vienna.
At 8:30 a.m. EST, Statistics Canada will release retail sales for December. Retail sales are expected to drop 2.7% month-over-month after a 2.4% decline in November.
At 10 a.m. Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini speaks.
At 10 a.m. the European Union's Environment Minister Stavros Dimas will speak.
At 10 a.m. EST, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas will release its index of manufacturing activity. The index is expected to fall 52.5% against a 50.5% drop the month prior.
At 12:40 p.m. EST, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart will speak in Orlando, Florida.
At 1 p.m. EST, the U.S. Treasury will sell $31 billion in 3-month bills.
At 1 p.m. EST, the U.S. Treasury will sell $30 billion in 6-month bills.
At 6 p.m. EST, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Richard Fisher will speak at Harvard on the financial crisis.
