Article Summary: This article will help anyone looking for information pertaining to a real estate license in the state of Indiana or anyone looking to become a real estate agent or realtor in Indiana. Contents of this article may include information on real estate education, schools, training courses, continuing education, tests and exams, laws, license requirements, renewal information, forms and more..

The Indiana Real Estate Commission is one of the 39 agencies that the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) oversees effective July 1, 2005. A Compilation of the Licensure Laws can be read online.

The requirements for a real estate salesperson license in Indiana include being at least 18 years of age and not having a conviction for any crime that would indicate the propensity to endanger the public. The applicant needs to take the prescribed 54-hour prelicensure courses. The applicant then must successfully pass the real estate exam within one year from completion of the courses. Salesperson applicants need to apply for their license within 120 days of passing the exam and pay the $35 license fee. The biannual renewal fee is also $35.

The requirements for a real estate broker license in Indiana include being at least 18 years of age and not having any convictions for acts or crimes that indicate untrustworthy behavior. The applicant needs to have active experience as a real estate salesperson for at least one year. Applicants can actually take the exam earlier, but they cannot be licensed until the year is up. Broker applicants are required to be a resident in Indiana. The license fee for a broker if $60 and the biannual renewal fee is also $60

All real estate licensees must take 16 hours of continuing education courses during the two-year license period. Six of the courses are mandatory and the rest are real estate electives.

Indiana currently has reciprocity agreements with 14 other states.

The real estate examinations are given electronically by ASI, an approved testing facility, and the examination fees are paid directly to ASI.

Real estate licenses are renewed every two years in Indiana, whether they are active or inactive. Salesperson licenses expire on December 31st of odd numbered years, and broker licenses expire on December 31st of even numbered years. When a licensee has not taken the required continuing education courses their license is held on an inactive basis as long as they pay the renewal fee. To activate an inactive license one needs to pay a $10 fee and file the required form.

Real estate careers are strengthened by membership in the many organizations that provide services for the professional agent. Those holding a real estate license usually join organizations like the Indiana Association of Realtors, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), and the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO). The National Association of Realtors (NAR), the world's largest professional association, assists many in locating real estate jobs within the industry. These organizations are also excellent resources of real estate education.
