The Senate looks set Wednesday to confirm Stanley Fischer, a respected economist and former head of the Bank of Israel, as a member of the Federal Reserve's board. The chamber has not yet set a date for a separate vote on his nomination to serve as board vice chairman, but he is expected to be confirmed easily at that point. The former MIT professor, International Monetary Fund First Deputy Managing Director and Citigroup Inc. vice chairman is likely to play a pivotal role in guiding the U.S. central bank toward a gradual exit from extraordinary monetary policies, including six years of interest rates at effectively zero and bond purchases totaling around $3 trillion.
