The Utah State Division of Real Estate provides public protection through the education and licensure of real estate agents. The main office of the Division is in Salt Lake City.

The requirements for a real estate salesperson license in Utah include being at least 18 years of age and providing fingerprints for a criminal background check. All applicants must provide proof of their honesty, integrity, truthfulness, reputation and competency. Applicants must successfully complete 120 hours of approved real estate courses, and all of these courses must be completed at an approved real estate school.

 Members of the Utah State Bar are considered to have fulfilled this requirement. Experience does not satisfy the education requirement. The real estate exams the salesperson applicants need to pass cover all aspects of real estate principals and practices in addition to arithmetic, bookkeeping and the English language. After passing the real estate exams the applicants must apply for their license within 90 days. The total license fees for salespersons is $147.  This consists of a non-refundable fee ($100 application fee, $12 recovery fund fee and $35 fingerprint processing fee).

To renew a license on active status an individual must complete 18 hours of certified Real Estate Continuing Education Courses and/or Online Continuing Education Courses every renewal cycle (two years), including 9 hours of approved core topic courses (highlighted in yellow).

The requirements for a real estate broker license in Utah include:

Being at least 18 years of age

Having at least three years of real estate experience,

Having a total of at least 60 points, accumulated within the five years prior to licensing, explained in the five tables.

120 hours of approved education at a certified Real Estate Pre-License School, consisting of:

• 12 hours Broker Management
• 24 hours Advanced Appraisal
• 24 hours Advanced Finance
• 24 hours Property Management
• 24 hours Advanced Real Estate Law
• 12 hours Utah License Law

Experience will not satisfy the education requirement, but certain other education requirements may substitute for some of the required education courses. Both exams need to be passed within a six-month period of time. After passing the real estate examinations the applicant needs to apply for the broker license within 90 days. The total license fees for brokers is $153.  This consists of a non-refundable fee ($100 application fee, $18 recovery fund fee and $35 fingerprint processing fee).

The renewal fee for salespersons is $64.00 and for brokers is $70.00. The fee for renewing late is $50.00 (up to 30 days), and if the license needs to be reinstated after the 30 days, the fee is $100.00. All license fees are non-refundable.

Utah has reciprocity agreements with Georgia, Mississippi and Alberta, Canada. The applicant must have an active status in their home state and provide fingerprints. The licensing fee for salespersons is $147.00 plus $12.00 for the recovery fund fee.
