Releasing a statement on Friday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said that the focus was to back Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac "in their current form".

Paulson added that the Treasury Department was continuing its dialogue with regulators and firms.

Stocks are under pressure as stocks from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac collapsed over the last two days and speculation of a government bailout increases.
